Beta-alanine 3.2 g
Effective in a very narrow window: efforts of 1 to 4 minutes. Nothing outside it.
The short version
What it does On efforts of one to four minutes, it pushes back the moment it starts to burn.
What it does not do No effect on a short sprint, on long endurance, or on health. It is a very targeted performance product.
What the studies say
Saunders’ meta-analysis pooled 40 trials: beta-alanine improves performance on efforts of 30 seconds to 10 minutes, with the maximal effect between 1 and 4 minutes. The mechanism is known: it raises muscle carnosine, which buffers acidity.
No effect on very short efforts — a 10-second sprint — or on long endurance. The average effect is real but small.
A performance product aimed at a precise effort window. Outside that window, it is useless.
How to take it
Relevant for repeated efforts of 1 to 4 minutes: swimming, rowing, track cycling, combat sports, CrossFit. Pointless in ordinary weight training, in a marathon, and for general health.
3 to 6 g a day, every day for at least 4 weeks — it is the muscle carnosine loading that counts, not a dose before the session. Split into 1.5 g doses to avoid the tingling.
Skin tingling (paraesthesia) is normal, harmless, and disappears when you split the dose. The effect is judged after a month, on timed efforts.
What is inside
Beta-alanine, a non-essential amino acid. Sustained-release forms exist to limit the tingling.
Pure powder rather than capsules, given the dose. The CarnoSyn label identifies controlled production, which matters little here because the molecule is simple.
Pre-workouts containing 1.6 g of it and relying on the tingling to make you believe “it is working” — the sensation has nothing to do with the real effect.
Cautions
- Skin tingling is common and harmless
- No use outside efforts of 1 to 4 minutes
The three options
CarnoSyn®, traceable raw material
CarnoSyn®, the ingredient from the trials
The patented raw material used in most of the trials, traceable, not an anonymous powder. One ingredient. This is not the sustained-release version: split into two 1.5 g doses to avoid the tingling.
For whom — Anyone who cannot tolerate the paraesthesia.
Pure, measurable powder
“Beta-alanine”, and nothing else
500 g, scoop included, 258 reviews. The scoop matters: the tingling disappears if you split into 1.5 g doses instead of one 6 g hit.
For whom — Standard use over 4 weeks of loading.
Large format
The kilo, nearly half the price per gram
Same single-ingredient list, same brand, in 1 kg instead of 500 g, for barely more.
For whom — Anyone who has confirmed the product suits them and wants several months’ supply.
