Oat beta-glucan 3 g

The third dietary lever on LDL — the bad cholesterol — and the only one you eat at breakfast.

Evidence level : solideGUIVONIZ index : 88Dose : 3 g of beta-glucan a day

The short version

What it does Three grams a day lowers bad cholesterol by about 0.25 mmol/L. The fibre forms a viscous gel in the gut, which traps part of the cholesterol instead of letting it through.

What it does not do It is not a cholesterol-lowering drug and it does not replace a prescribed statin. And watch the real dose: 3 g of beta-glucan is not 3 g of oats — it is about 75 g of flakes.

What the studies say

Twenty-eight randomised trials pooled by Whitehead: at 3 g a day, an LDL fall of about 0.25 mmol/L and total cholesterol of about 0.30 mmol/L. The effect is found in Europe, North America, Asia and Australia, in lean and overweight people, with and without type 2 diabetes. EFSA recognised the cause-and-effect link and authorised the claim from that dose.

It is an effect on a marker, not on counted heart attacks — the same limit as for phytosterols. Industrial processing degrades the fibre’s molecular weight and therefore its viscosity, which reduces the effect: a highly refined powder is not worth a whole flake. And results are clearer in a liquid matrix than in a biscuit or a bread.

With psyllium and phytosterols, it is the third documented dietary lever on LDL — and all three act through different mechanisms, so they stack. This one has the advantage of being eaten at breakfast.

How to take it

Relevant with high LDL, or alongside a dietary approach agreed with your doctor. Not very relevant if your lipid panel is good: this is not an all-purpose prevention product.

Aim for 3 g of beta-glucan a day, which is about 75 g of oat flakes, or the stated dose if you take a concentrate. Preferably in a liquid. Build up over a week: fibre can bloat at first.

Lipid panel before, then at three months. If LDL has not moved, first check you are taking 3 g of beta-glucan and not 3 g of product.

What is inside

Beta-glucan, the soluble fibre of oats and barley. Two presentations: whole flakes, where the fibre stays in its matrix, and powder concentrates, assayed for beta-glucan.

The criterion is the stated BETA-GLUCAN CONTENT, not the product weight. For a concentrate, look for an explicit assay. For flakes, prefer the least processed — a large flake keeps a higher molecular weight than instant oats, and that is what makes the effect.

Products advertising “high in fibre” without quantifying the beta-glucan. Enriched biscuits and bars, where the solid matrix gives contradictory results. Caution in digestive stricture, as with any fibre.

Cautions

  • Known digestive stricture
  • Building up too fast: bloating

The three options

The capsule exists, but you need nine

You would need NINE a day

500 mg assayed at 70 %, so 350 mg per capsule, when the trials that lower LDL use 3 g. A 120-capsule bottle would last thirteen days. For the rest the list is clean: assayed oat bran, plant capsule, 31 reviews. It is the only concentrate in the aisle, and it does not replace a bowl of oats.

For whom — For those who will not eat oats, knowing what it costs.

Lightly processed oat bran

The bran, the richest part

Organic oat bran, 1.2 kg, 107 reviews. Count 40 to 50 g to approach the 3 g. What is missing: no oat bran brand states its exact content, this one no more than the others.

For whom — The default choice: it is a food, it costs little and it feeds you.

Oat flakes in a large format

10 kg, the lowest cost per kilo on the site

Organic jumbo flakes, four 2.5 kg bags, no additives. Jumbo flakes and not instant oats: instant is pre-cooked and rolled thinner, it digests faster and the effect is blunted. Count 75 g a day.

For whom — Anyone who prefers a breakfast to a capsule — and that is often the right instinct.
