Bioavailable curcumin 500 mg
On joint discomfort, bioavailable forms hold their own against mild anti-inflammatories in several trials.
The short version
What it does On established joint pain, it reduces pain and stiffness in several trials.
What it does not do A plain turmeric capsule does nothing: curcumin absorbs very poorly without a dedicated system. And piperine changes the absorption of many medicines.
What the studies say
Daily’s meta-analysis pooled the randomised trials on turmeric and curcumin in osteoarthritis: reductions in pain and stiffness scores comparable to usual anti-inflammatories in several trials, over 4 to 12 weeks.
Modest-sized, heterogeneous trials, often funded by extract manufacturers. Raw curcumin passes through the gut without being absorbed: without a process to help it reach the bloodstream, a capsule does nothing.
A serious lead on inflammatory joint pain, provided you take a genuinely absorbable form.
How to take it
Relevant for morning stiffness or established joint pain. Less relevant for acute post-exercise pain, where reducing inflammation can blunt adaptation.
500 to 1,000 mg of curcuminoids a day, during a meal containing fat. Allow 4 to 8 weeks before judging.
The things to judge are morning stiffness and how far you can walk without pain, not an immediate sensation. If nothing at 8 weeks, stop.
What is inside
Of everything on this site, this is the product where “does it actually reach the bloodstream?” matters most. Pure curcumin has very low intestinal absorption and fast elimination. Three solutions exist: pairing with piperine from black pepper, which slows elimination; phytosomal formulations, where curcumin is bound to phospholipids; and micellar or nanoparticle forms.
Read the CURCUMINOID content, not the turmeric powder weight — a dried rhizome only contains 2 to 5 %. Check which process is used to get it into the bloodstream, and that it is named on the label. A product showing neither is useless.
Plain turmeric powder capsules. Careful: piperine also increases absorption of many medicines, which can change their effects. Contraindicated in bile duct obstruction, and caution on anticoagulants.
Cautions
- Gallstones
- Anticoagulants
- Before surgery
The three options
Standardised phytosomal formulation
180 mg of actual curcuminoids
Meriva® phytosome, the most studied absorption system in the category, with the content stated per 500 mg of complex. Many advertise “500 mg of turmeric” without saying how much curcumin is inside: that is the figure to look for.
For whom — Established joint pain, an eight-week course.
Curcuminoids + piperine
Meriva® + black pepper
Curcumin bound to lecithin, with a measurement of what actually reaches the bloodstream, and vitamin C. 60 capsules. Worth knowing: pepper piperine increases absorption of curcumin, but also of certain medicines. Mention it if you are on treatment.
For whom — Everyday use, if you are not on medication.
Plain standardised extract
WITHOUT piperine
Turmipure Gold®, 300 mg, organic extract. Absorption comes from quillaia bark and acacia fibre, not from pepper. This is the option to take if you are on medication.
For whom — Tight budget. Absolutely avoid turmeric powder in capsules: it only contains 2 to 5 % curcuminoids.
