Blond psyllium husk 500 g
The fibre with the most clinical data, for two euros a week.
The short version
What it does It regulates transit in both directions, and lowers bad cholesterol.
What it does not do Without a large glass of water, it makes worse the constipation it was meant to solve. And it can cause bloating if you build the dose up too fast.
What the studies say
Jovanovski’s meta-analysis pooled the randomised trials on psyllium and cholesterol: a reproducible fall in LDL — the bad cholesterol — and in the other markers that go with it. It is one of the few dietary levers with a measurable, consistent effect on a marker that matters. Slavin’s framework on fibre separately describes the mechanisms on transit.
The LDL effect is modest at the individual level. And without water, psyllium makes worse the constipation it was meant to solve.
Two genuine uses: transit and LDL. Few products on this site have two indications this well documented.
How to take it
Relevant for slow transit, unstable transit, or a lipid panel to improve. Less relevant for isolated bloating — fibre can make it worse before it makes it better.
Start at 3 g a day and build up gradually over ten days to 5 to 10 g. ALWAYS in a large glass of water, drunk straight away — psyllium swells very fast. Leave 2 hours around your medication, because it reduces absorption.
Transit responds in one to two weeks. For LDL, you need a blood test at three months. If you bloat as you increase the dose, drop back and build up more slowly.
What is inside
Husks of Plantago ovata seeds. Two forms: whole husks (blond) and powder. Whole husks swell more slowly, which is more comfortable.
Look for a blond psyllium with a high husk content — some products are cut with whole seed, which is less active. An organic product limits exposure to residues, psyllium being very lightly processed.
Never without water, and never just before bed: there is a risk of oesophageal obstruction. Contraindicated in known digestive stricture.
Cautions
- Digestive stricture
- Swallowing difficulties
