Retinol 0.3 to 0.5 % — night treatment
The second “skin” product on this site with real trials behind it. The first is still sunscreen.
The short version
What it does It speeds up skin renewal and restarts collagen production. On fine wrinkles and texture, the effect is measured — and it shows in three to six months, not three weeks.
What it does not do It does not repair the sun damage still to come: that is sunscreen’s job, and it comes first. It almost always irritates at the start, and it is formally forbidden during pregnancy.
What the studies say
Seven randomised trials on topical tretinoin, the prescription version, all show improvement in wrinkles and in the marks left by the sun — visible from one month, maintained beyond two years. A later meta-analysis in 1,361 patients confirms the effect on fine and deep wrinkles. For over-the-counter retinol, Kafi’s trial (0.4 % over 24 weeks, against vehicle) finds a clear improvement in fine wrinkles.
Retinol trials are fewer, shorter — six months at most — and the concentrations tested run from 0.04 to 1 %, which makes comparison difficult. Many had not said in advance what they were setting out to measure — which lets you pick the most flattering result afterwards. Tretinoin remains the reference, but it needs a prescription and irritates more.
After sunscreen, it is the best supported “skin” product in the catalogue — and it comes clearly ahead of oral collagen on this indication. Allow three to six months, and accept the irritation phase.
How to take it
Relevant from about 30, on fine wrinkles or uneven texture. Pointless before, and to be ruled out if your skin is very reactive or you have active eczema. Formally contraindicated in pregnancy or breastfeeding.
At night, on dry skin, a pea-sized amount for the whole face. Twice a week for two weeks, then three times, then every other night if your skin keeps up. Wait five minutes after cleansing: applied to damp skin, it penetrates more and irritates more. Moisturiser on top if it feels tight.
Redness and small flakes in the first two weeks: that is expected. If it burns or the skin cracks, space out the applications rather than stopping. The result is judged at three months on texture, at six months on wrinkles — take a photo at the start, it is the only way to see slow change.
What is inside
Retinol, converted in two steps into retinoic acid by the skin. Encapsulated or stabilised forms protect the molecule, which degrades in light and air. Retinaldehyde is an intermediate — closer to retinoic acid, so theoretically more potent, but a 44-week trial found no difference from vehicle.
An OPAQUE and AIRTIGHT container — tube or pump bottle, never an open jar: a retinol in a clear jar is already degraded. Concentration stated plainly. Claims like “retinoid complex” or “retinol alternative” with no percentage mean nothing.
Forbidden during pregnancy and breastfeeding — that is a formal contraindication, not a precaution. Do not combine on the same evening with an exfoliating acid (AHA, BHA) or with vitamin C: the irritation adds up. And never without sunscreen the next day.
Cautions
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding: formal contraindication
- Eczema or rosacea flare
- Sun exposure without protection
The three options
Traceable concentration at 0.5 %
0.5 % stated in black and white
A squalane base, opaque bottle, 3,130 reviews. A reading trap: the page’s machine translation writes “5 %” where the product contains 0.5 %. That is a translation error, not a dose.
For whom — Skin already used to retinoids, or wanting a dose you can quote and compare.
Encapsulated retinol, less irritating
Encapsulated, but dose not published
The capsule protects the molecule and releases it slowly, which reduces the initial irritation. With niacinamide and ceramides, 12,611 reviews. You know it is gentle encapsulated retinol, not at what strength.
For whom — Skin that tolerates it badly: encapsulation cushions the early redness, at the cost of an undisclosed concentration.
Low-dose retinol to start
0.1 %: the right first rung
In cream, 3,488 reviews. It comes from the same laboratory as the premium option: you can step up to 0.5 % in three months without changing formula or relearning your tolerance.
For whom — First time with a retinoid: start low, step up after three months.
